MLS (Multiwave Locked System) Laser Therapy

Campus Estates Animal Hospital is excited to offer our clients and patients MLS (Multiwave Locked System) laser therapy.

What is laser therapy?

MLS laser is a Class IV patented emission system that produces two wavelengths that generate simultaneous anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects (decreases pain and inflammation).

How long does the treatment take?

Treatment protocols are unique to each patient and condition. Each treatment can range from 10-30 minutes and most chronic conditions have protocols ranging from 6-10 treatments. There can also be one or two 5-minute treatments following a surgical procedure.

What are the benefits of MLS laser therapy?

There are many benefits of laser therapy, including:

  • Anti-inflammatory effects
  • Analgesia effects (relief of pain)
  • Increased tissue repair and cell growth
  • Improved vascular activity
  • Increased metabolic activity
  • Decrease in fibrous tissue thereby decreasing scar tissue
  • Improved nerve function
  • Faster wound healing

What can be treated with our MLS laser?

There are several applications for therapeutic laser. Here are a few examples.

  • Arthritis
  • Gingival tissue after surgical tooth extraction
  • Tendonitis
  • Lameness
  • Wounds, both acute and chronic
  • Sinusitis
  • Inflamed ears
  • Feather picking
  • Lick granulomas
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Disk disease

What is involved in treating my pet?

First off, we protect your pet’s eyes by either covering them with a towel or blanket, or with the ‘cool’ glasses. The laser is then delivered through a non-invasive hand piece to treat the affected area. There is no heat that is generated by this laser. As the laser is administered many pets will relax, much like you would during a good massage. The almost immediate relief of pain will allow your pet to be more comfortable and any anxiety that your pet may initially experience will dissipate.

Are there any side effects?

There are no known negative side effects with this laser treatment.

What can I expect at home?

You may see a change in activity when your pet comes home. For some it may be increased activity and others may be more relaxed. This is due to pain relief and reduction in inflammation.

Is there anything my pet should or shouldn’t do or take while receiving laser treatment?

We will develop a treatment protocol but you should not need to fast your pet or change their regular activity level.

When can I expect to see improvement? What might I see?

You may see relief after the first treatment or as the pain of inflammation is reduced. There may be better mobility for arthritic patients, decreased redness and irritation in infected ears, and faster wound healing. All of these will lead to a more comfortable pet.
